Eric D. Campbell's Biography

Eric D. Campbell currently serves as an Executive Manager with the Berkley Group, LLC., where his focus is executive management and leadership consulting.   He most recently served as a Senior Practitioner in Residence, Public Administration program at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, Virginia Commonwealth University where he was responsible for local government outreach and taught graduate level courses.  Before that, he served as City Manager of Harrisonburg, Virginia, overseeing a municipal operation of 800 employees and a total budget of approximately $300 million.  He holds the distinction of being the first African American to serve as Harrisonburg City Manager.  He spent the first 20 years of his career in various positions in Virginia local government.  He is an experienced local government executive having served as an Assistant City Manager in Dallas, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina, respectively.

A graduate of Hampton University with a B.A. in Psychology, he received a Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.  In June 2023, he received the Maxwell School Public Administration Alumni Award.  He attended the Senior Executive Institute at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service (UVA) and completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  

He is an active member of the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA), and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) which recognized him for 30 years of local government service. He has served on numerous regional and state boards.
