Alan Archer's Biography

Alan K. Archer serves as City Manager for the City of Newport News, Virginia— the Commonwealth’s fifth-largest city with a population of over 186,000 residents. In this role, he oversees a $1.2 billion annual operating budget and leads a workforce of approximately 3,600 employees. With more than three decades of experience in municipal management, Mr. Archer has held key leadership roles including Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Hopewell, Assistant to the City Manager in Petersburg, and Director of the Virginia and Carolinas Innovation Group (Alliance for Innovation).

Alan holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from James Madison University and a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is also a graduate of the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia. Throughout his career, Alan has remained deeply engaged in community service, serving on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations. In recognition of his efforts to combat homelessness, he was inducted into the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board Hall of Fame in 2019.

Born in Nigeria while his parents were serving with the United States Agency for International Development—working to improve lives through agricultural development and food security—Alan was raised in Tallahassee, Florida before moving with his family to Chesterfield, Virginia in 1981.

Today, Alan resides in Newport News with his wife of thirty years, Helene. Together, they have one son, JaCari.
