Virginia General Assembly Survey 2026

The Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service is conducting a survey of the Virginia General Assembly to help Virginians better understand how their legislature serves them and the Commonwealth.  The survey results will capture the varied experiences of the legislators and all legislative staff. To protect participants’ privacy and encourage candid responses, this survey is fully anonymous.

The survey begins in June and is open to all 140 members of the Virginia General Assembly, as well as full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff within the General Assembly. Questions address office staffing structure and capacity, time demands and allocation, training priorities, resource use, other employment experiences, and preferences regarding the future of General Assembly processes and infrastructure.

The Weldon Cooper Center is partnering with the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) to process the data and analyze the results. Beginning in late November 2026, aggregated findings will be made publicly available.  Virginians and legislators alike may then engage in informed and open dialogue to develop policies and strategies that ensure the long-term sustainability of legislative service in Virginia.

If you are a GA member or staff and would like to take the survey, please use the link sent directly to your virginia.gov email, the QR code mailed to your Richmond and district address, or contact the Cooper Center’s Center for Survey Research at surveys1@virginia.edu or 434-243-5226.
