According to the Census Bureau's newly released estimates of population by age, sex, race & Hispanic origin:
  • Overall, 12% of Virginia's population was 65 and older in 2007. In Lancaster County, located in the Northern Neck of Virginia, 31% of the population was 65 and older.
  • Greensville County had the highest proportion of males at 63% and Williamsburg had the highest proportion of females at 56%.
  • Four counties and 8 cities were "majority-minority" meaning the population had more than 50 percent minority residents. The minority population is defined as anyone who indicated that they were either Hispanic or a race other than white alone.

  • Until 1970, one in every 100 Virginians was born outside the United States. In 2006, one in every 10 Virginians was foreign-born.
  • In Virginia, 12.5 percent of adults are veterans.
  • Virginia’s population reached 7.7 million on July 1, 2007, increasing by more than 633,000 since the 2000 Census.
  • One out of every three Virginians lives in Northern Virginia.
