Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. For students who are applying to non-UIP affiliated summer internships and need verification that they are eligible to receive academic credit, UIP offers students the ability to earn academic credit for summer internships at companies that require their interns to receive academic credit. This is done through our Internship To-Go program option, a distance learning format in which interns complete academic assignments via the Internet.
UIP will work with you throughout the process of securing an Internship-to-Go and meeting the requirements of both the sponsoring organization and U.Va. UIP provides academic support comparable to the On-Grounds programs, including:
- Certifying your eligibility to receive credit and meet the technical and legal requirements of the sponsor
- Meetings to prepare you for your internship and debrief you upon your return to U.Va
- Off-Grounds distance learning format and assignments
- Feedback on both your academic and field performance throughout your internship
- Regular and crisis consultations with 'on-call' faculty
- Documents, letters, and signatures as required by the internship sponsoring organization
Although To-Go interns cannot attend a weekly academic seminar, you will fulfill the academic component by completing weekly check-ins, short papers related to assigned readings and a final paper. Making use of the Internet and Collab, the To-Go Internship format allows you to intern across the country and around the world. Your ‘faculty-on-call’ will consult with you throughout your internship and evaluate your written work. Like other interns your internship/field sponsor will evaluate your performance twice during your internship. Students participating in the To-Go Internship option MUST enroll in the 8-week Summer Session and pay applicable University tuition and related fees.
Please note:
- To-Go Internships are self-initiated and arranged on an individual basis
- Dates for a To-Go Internship should coincide with the academic calendar dates for the Summer Session
- Application procedures and requirements vary considerably between organizations
- Applications should be made early in order to make necessary arrangements with sponsors
- To-Go interns must participate in the half-day To-Go Orientation
- Confirmation of your internship must be made no later than May 3
- To-Go interns may also participate in the Academic Year Internship option in Charlottesville
If you wish to pursue a To-Go Internship, please call the UIP office at 434-982-2055. The deadline to complete processing is May 3.
Yes. Students studying abroad during the Spring Semester who are interested in participating in the UIP Academic Year Internship Program in Charlottesville (Fall & Spring Semesters) must apply to the University Internship Programs (UIP) by November 18, 2009. Please email Ms. Shizuka Modica, Ph.D., SModica@virginia.edu, for application instructions and to schedule an interview.
Assuming the availability of internships related to your field of study/interest, the placement process involves at least 2 interviews--the first with UIP and then another with a potential internship sponsor.
Should you miss the initial application deadline of November 18, 2009 and/or should you have further questions, please direct them to Ms. Shizuka Modica, Ph.D., 434-982-2055, or SModica@virginia.edu, or Ms. Karen A. Farber, Ph.D., MBA, 434-982-5552, or KFarber@virginia.edu
Internships are an increasingly popular feature of study abroad programs. Typically, study abroad internships are self-initiated and arranged within the parameters of the study abroad program on an individual basis. Application procedures and requirements vary greatly. Moreover, deadlines for programs vary depending on location, with most deadlines falling in between mid-September and mid-October. Some schools conduct rolling admissions until the programs are full, so be sure to check with the specific program to determine if there is available space.
Please note that acceptance in study abroad internship programs are not guaranteed by the University Internship Programs (UIP). However, when applicable, the UIP office will facilitate the credit transfer process by providing you with the required documentation, letters and signatures.
As with all credits earned in study abroad programs, approval of study abroad internship credit must be completed PRIOR to participating in the program.
Please note that academic internship requirements are not uniform across study abroad program offerings. UIP will continue to review and approve all requests for transfer credit for internship programs on a case-by-case/country-by-country basis.
To request review and approval of transfer credit, or for more information, please call Ms. Karen A. Farber, UIP Director at 434.982.5552 or Ms. Shizuka Modica, Student Services Coordinator & Lecturer at 434.982.2055.
It is not unusual for others to make judgments about you within 10 seconds of meeting you. You never get a second opportunity to make a good first impression. Therefore, make sure you are appropriately groomed and dressed for interviewing and interning associated with the University Internship Programs (UIP).
The guidelines below should give you an idea of what to wear for your UIP interviews and internship.
If you have questions about appropriate dress and grooming, please call the UIP office at 434.982.2055.
What to wear for the University Internship Programs (UIP) Information Sessions...
You are expected to dress comfortably for the UIP Information Sessions. There is no dress code. Feel free to wear whatever you normally wear to class to the Information Session.
What to wear for the matching interview with the University Internship Programs (UIP) Staff...
You are expected to wear "business casual" for the placement interview with the UIP staff.
What to wear to the field interview with your potential internship sponsor...
You are expected to wear either "business casual" or "business formal" to the field interview with your potential internship sponsor.
What to wear to your weekly internship field assignment...
You are expected to wear "business casual" to your weekly internship assignment unless otherwise specified. The nature of the internship and the amount and type of public contact will determine appropriate attire. For example, in finance and banking settings, "business formal" attire, or a variation thereof, may be required. Please discuss the dress code requirements with your potential internship sponsor during the field interview.
What to wear to the mandatory UIP Academic and Field Orientation in August...
The mandatory UIP Academic and Field Orientation consists of two sessions: morning session on-Grounds with UIP faculty and staff immediately followed by an afternoon session with your field sponsor at your internship site. Therefore, you are expected to wear "business casual" unless your field sponsor previously instructed you to dress otherwise.
The following guidelines are applicable to your initial matching interview with UIP and your initial field interview with your potential sponsor. Attire guidelines applicable to your weekly internship assignment should be discussed with your potential internship sponsor during the field interview.
