What Should I Wear...Business Formal or Business Casual Attire?
It is not unusual for others to make judgements about you within 10 seconds of meeting you. You never get a second opportunity to make a good first impression. Therefore, make sure you are appropriately groomed and dressed for interviewing and interning associated with the University Internship Programs (UIP).
The guidelines below should give you an idea of what to wear for your UIP interviews and internship, and, the difference between "business formal" and "business casual"

What to wear for the University Internship Programs (UIP) Information Sessions...
You are expected to dress comfortably for the UIP Information Sessions to be held on the dates listed below. There is no dress code. Feel free to wear whatever you wore to class that day to the Info. Session.

What to wear for the matching interview with the University Internship Programs (UIP) Staff...
You are expected to wear "business casual" for the placement interview with the UIP staff.
What to wear to the field interview with your potential internship sponsor...
You are expected to wear "business formal" to the field interview with your potential internship sponsor.
What to wear to your weekly internship field assignment...
You are expected to wear "business casual" to your weekly internship assignment unless otherwise specified. Depending on the nature of the internship and the amount and type of public contact, sometimes internship sponsors require uniforms, such as a medical and health-related settings; or "business formal" attire or a variation thereof, such as finance and banking settings. Please discuss the dress code requirements with your potential internship sponsor during the field interview.
What to wear to the Mandatory UIP Academic and Field Orientation in August...
The Mandatory UIP Academic and Field Orientation consists of two sessions: morning session on-Grounds with UIP faculty and staff immediately followed by an afternoon session with your field sponsor at your internship site. Therefore, you are expected to wear "business casusl" unless your field sponsor previously instructed you to dress otherwise.
What is Business Formal and Business Casual Attire?
The following guidelines are applicable to your initial matching interview with UIP and your initial field interview with your potential sponsor. Attire guidelines applicable to your on-going, weekly, internship assignment should be discussed with your potential internship sponsor during the field interview.
In general, and under most internship circumstances, display/exposure of temporary or permanent nail and body art; body adornments beyond convential and conservative jewelry; and body modification techniques such as tattooing, piercing, branding, scaring and the like are not acceptable with respect to either business formal or business casual attire.
Also, be cautious of various fashion trends. They may or may not be appropriate or recognized as fashionable by your interviewer.
Men's Business Formal Attire:
- A suit, preferably in a dark color (black, charcoal, navy and other dark colors are usually appropriate)
- Long-sleeve dress shirt
- A tie
- Black or dark brown dress shoes
- Dark socks to complement your suit
- Minimal jewelry and cologne
Men's Business Casual Attire:
- Neat slacks or trousers (no denim)
- Button-down, tucked in shirt
- Socks that complement your slacks/trousers
- Leather casual shoes (no sneakers, sandals or flip-flops)
- Minimal jewelry and cologne
- A jacket is optional
Women's Business Formal Attire:
- A mid-knee length (plus or minus 1.5") skirt suit preferably in a dark color (black, charcoal, navy and other dark colors) is usually appropriate. Pant suits and other suit styles may or may not be appropriate in some field interview settings. (No denim)
- Conservative blouse (either tucked inito your skirt/pant waistband; or, if untucked, buttom of blouse should fall several inches below your skirt/pant waistband)
- Mid-heel, closed-toe dress shoes
- Hose
- Minimal jewelry, perfume and makeup
Women's Business Casual Attire:
- A mid-knee-length (plus or minus 1.5") skirt, or neat slacks (no denim)
- Conservative blouse, sweater, or twin set (either tucked into your skirt/slacks waistband; or, if untucked, bottom of garmet should fall several inches below your skirt/slacks waistband)
- Low-to-mid-heel professional shoes (no sneakers, sandals or flip-flops)
- Hose or slack socks or knee-highs
- Minimal jewelry, perfume and makeup
- A jacket is optional
