SPONSOR APPLICATION
Since 1976, over 6,000 U.Va. students have been placed in internships through the University Internship Programs. UIP Student interns have provided approximately 1.5 million hours of service to the community. Each semester, UIP matches approximately 250 University of Virginia undergraduate student interns with 200 sponsors in business, government and non-profit organizations in the Charlottesville area.
The University Internship Program continually seeks to expand the breadth of our program. If you are an established organization in the Charlottesville area that currently employs more than three people and could benefit from the efforts of bright, talented University of Virginia students, we encourage you to consider participating in this unique opportunity. By partnering with the University Internship Program, we hope to cooperatively provide students with a professional or semi-professional experience while also working to strengthen University-community ties.
We are delighted at the prospect of working with you to develop and design internships that will meet the needs of both your organization and our student interns. Please explore the possibility of becoming a University Internship Programs sponsor by browsing the information provided below. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please complete the online sponsor application. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Karen Farber, UIP Director at 434-982-2055, kfarber@virginia.edu or Dawn Anderson, Student Services Coordinator & Lecturer 434-982-5552, dla3y@virginia.edu.
Program Overview & Internship Options
The University Internship Program provides students and sponsors the opportunity to see experiential learning in action. In addition to working in the field, students participate in an academic seminar designed to assist them in understanding their personal and professional development while learning about community and organizational concerns. University interns serve at no monetary cost to sponsoring organizations. Interns are available for 15 hours per week during the summer (June-August) and 10 hours per week during the academic year (September-May). Interns earn graded credit for their participation in this experiential learning program, with forty percent of the intern's final grade determined by the organizational sponsor's evaluation.
Students apply to the University Internship Programs during the Spring semester of their third-year for an internship placement during the summer and/or their fourth-year. In their applications, students indicate internship preferences on which their eventual placements are made.
