Academic Year 2006 - 2007
The University Internship Program (UIP) offers one academic year and four summer internship options from which to choose.
1. Academic Year
2. Extended Summer
3. Summer On-Grounds
4. Summer in Washington
5. Internships-to-Go
Academic Year:
By
far the most popular format, a two-semester internship gives you the
kind of in-depth experience and responsibility that most students seek.
This option allows you to be involved with a sponsoring organization
and UIP seminar faculty over an extended period.
This
option provides more opportunity to acquire, apply, and refine your
skills and knowledge over a longer period of time. After orientation,
interns begin work with clients or are assigned to one or more
projects. Past interns have planned and carried out a project to its
completion. Interns gain valuable experience in a chosen field, align
personal skills and interests to help the sponsoring organization
accomplish its mission.
WHEN: Fall 2006 & Spring 2007
Extended Summer:
This
option allows you to continue your summer session internship on through
the fall semester. It combines the intensive involvement of the Summer
on-Grounds option with the more extensive commitment of the fall
semester. Like the Academic Year, the Extended Summer option
involves you with a sponsoring organization and UIP seminar faculty
over an extended period. You will intern for 15 hours per week during
the summer and 10 hours per week during the fall, and participate in a
weekly two-hour academic seminar.
You may elect to continue your internship during the spring semester at the same organization or work with another sponsor.
WHEN: Summer 2006 & Fall 2007. Spring 2008 – optional.
NOTE: Students participating in the Extended Summer option MUST enroll in Summer Session and pay tuition and fees
Summer On-Grounds:
This
option is designed for students whose schedule cannot accommodate the
Academic Year or Extended Summer options or who are planning to
be in Charlottesville for this summer. The number of internships
available through this option is limited, however. During the summer,
you will intern 15 hours per week and participate in a weekly two-hour
academic seminar.
If
you elect this option, you have the opportunity to participate in two
different UIP options – the Summer On-Grounds and the Academic Year options.
When: Summer Session 2006 – 9 weeks
NOTE: Students participating in the Summer On-Grounds option MUST enroll in Summer Session and pay tuition and fees
Summer in Washington Program:
If
you live near Washington, D.C. or plan to spend the summer there, this
option gives you an opportunity to earn academic credit while interning
a one of the many number of organizations in the metro Washington area
that host interns. The Summer in Washington Program is identical in
format and content to the Summer On-Grounds option. You will intern
for 15 hours per week and participate in a weekly academic seminar.
A
UVa faculty member will teach the 2-hour academic seminar at a facility
in the Northern Virginia area. Summer in Washington interns may
also participate in the Academic Year option.
Please note:
- Summer in Washington internships are self-initiated and arranged on an individual basis.
- UIP
will help identify potential sponsors in the metro Washington area, but
you must apply directly to the sponsors. UIP will provide
documents/letters and signatures as required.
- Application
procedures and requirements vary considerably between organizations.
Applications should be made early in order to make necessary
arrangements with sponsors.
- Confirmation of your internship must be made no later than May 15.
WHEN: Summer Session 2006 – 9 weeks
NOTE: Students participating in the Summer On-Grounds option MUST enroll in Summer Session and pay tuition and fees
Internship To Go:
This
program is specifically designed for those who cannot take advantage of
the Summer On-Grounds or the Summer in Washington options but who have
identified internship opportunities elsewhere and want to earn
university credit for your work.
Although
To-Go interns cannot attend a weekly academic seminar, you will fulfill
the academic component by completing weekly check-ins, structured
journals related to assigned readings and a final paper. Making use of
the Internet and ToolKit, the Internships-to-Go format allows you to
intern across the country and around the world. Your ‘faculty-on-call’
will consult with you throughout your internship and evaluate your
written work. Like other interns your field sponsor will evaluate your
performance twice during your internship experience.
UIP
will work with you throughout the process of securing an
Internship-to-Go and meeting the requirements of both the sponsoring
organization and UVa. UIP provides academic support comparable to the
On-Grounds programs, including:
- Certifying your eligibility to receive credit and meet the technical and legal requirements of the sponsor.
- Meetings to prepare you for your internship and debrief you upon your return to UVa.
- Web accessible assignments.
- Feedback on both your academic and field performance throughout you internship
- Regular and crisis consultations with ‘on-call’ faculty
