Summer Internship Program in other U.S. cities (9-week Summer Session) Summer Internship Program in other cities abroad (9-week Summer Session)
Academic Year Internship Program in Charlottesville (Fall & Spring Semesters)
By far the most popular option, this two-semester internship gives you the kind of in-depth experience and responsibility that most students seek. This option allows you to be involved with a sponsoring organization and UIP seminar faculty over two semesters. This option provides more opportunity to acquire, apply, and refine your skills and knowledge over a longer period of time. After orientation, interns work with clients or are assigned to one or more projects during the academic year.
Summer Internship Program in Charlottesville Summer Session)
This option provides you with the opportunity to gain academic credit and intern in the Charlottesville area for nine weeks during the summer, however, the number of internships available through this option is limited. You will intern 15 hours per week and participate in a weekly two-hour academic seminar during U.Va's nine-week summer session.
Extended Summer Internship Program in Charlottesville (Summer Session & Fall Semester)
This option provides you with the opportunity to continue your summer session internship through the fall semester. It combines the intensive involvement of the summer in Charlottesville option with the more extensive commitment of the fall semester. Like the Academic Year, the Extended Summer option involves you with a sponsoring organization and UIP seminar faculty over an extended period. You will intern for 15 hours per week during the summer and 10 hours per week during the fall and participate in a weekly two-hour academic seminar.
To-Go Summer Internship Program in Washington, D. C. (Summer Session)
If you live near Washington, D.C. or plan to spend the summer there and have identified an internship sponsor, this option provides the opportunity to earn academic credit while interning. UIP will work with you throughout your process of researching and securing an Internship-to-Go and meeting the requirements of both the sponsoring organization and U.Va. UIP
provides academic support comparable to the Summer in Charlottesville program and will provide the administrative support comparable to the To-Go Summer Internship Elsewhere option. The Summer in Washington Program is identical in format and content to the Summer in Charlottesville option. You will intern a minimum of 15 hours per week and participate in a weekly two-hour academic seminar during U.Va’s nine-week Summer Session. A U.Va. faculty member will conduct the two-hour academic seminar at a facility in the Northern Virginia area.
To-Go Summer Internship Programs Abroad in Dublin,Ireland & Paris,France (Special Summer Session)
The University Internship Program (UIP) and the International Studies Office (ISO) have partnered with EUSA to develop, build, and customize European internships for U.Va. Students. For 8 weeks, June 2, 2008-July 26, 2008, internships will be available for students in Dublin, Ireland. Beginning in the Summer of 2009, the UIP will offer a similiar internship abroad program in Paris. Participating students will be able to intern in a variety of professional fields including: private sector business, political parties, law, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), hospitals, lobby groups, professional associations, and many more. Internships are determined by your interest, studies, experience, and professional and academic plans.
The program includes an on-Grounds academic and internship orientation, followed by a professional practice, unpaid academic internship, interning full-time (35-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday). Program costs include tuition, housing, internship placement, administration, orientations, a basic social program, and mobile phone rental for the duration of the program.
Students interning in Dublin will live in Shanowen Square, a newly built, fully furnished apartment complex especially designed for student use. For linguistic and cultural reasons, if you choose to intern in Paris, you benefit from home stays in order to continue to improve language skills outside the office environment. Proficiency in French language skills is a requirement of the Paris internship program.
To-Go Summer Internship Program Elsewhere (Summer Session)
This option is specifically designed for those who cannot take advantage of any of the other internship options listed above but who have identified internship opportunities elsewhere and want to earn University credit. UIP will work with you throughout the process of securing an Internship-to-Go and meeting the requirements of both the sponsoring organization and U.Va. UIP provides academic support comparable to the summer in Charlottesville programs, including:
• Certifying that you are eligible to receive credit and meet the technical and legal requirements of the sponsor. • Meetings to prepare you for your internship and debrief you upon your return to U.Va. • Web accessible assignments. • Feedback on your academic and field performance throughout your internship. • Regular and crisis consultations with on-call faculty. • UIP will help identify potential sponsors, but you must apply directly to the sponsors. • Application procedures and requirements vary considerably between organizations, therefore, applications should be made early in order to make necessary arrangements with sponsors. • UIP will provide documents, letters and signatures as required.
Confirmation of your internship must be made no later than May 1.
