Graduation from an accredited law school, admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and five to ten years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of law. Past local government experience an important consideration, with service as a local government attorney or deputy attorney in a comparably sized or larger community desirable. CITY OF PORTSMOUTH
ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY II
The City of Portsmouth is seeking an attorney to provide a variety of litigation services to the City and its employees and officials, including civil litigation and code enforcement, pretrial and appellate responsibilities, and administrative hearing duties. The attorney will research legal issues, draft legal pleadings, documents, and memoranda and assist other office attorneys with complex litigation. The attorney may also be required by the City Attorney to provide similar services to the School Board and to undertake additional nonlitigation duties. The position requires graduation from an accredited school of law and 3 to 5 years of experience in the practice of law, including substantial litigation experience in state and/or federal courts. Local government experience is preferred, but any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
