Culpeper County (population: 44,000) is seeking a well-rounded, innovative, and responsive legal professional to serve as the full time County Attorney for a position to be available on May 1, 2012. The Culpeper County Attorney is the chief legal officer and counsel to the County of Culpeper and is appointed by the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors. Successful candidates should possess excellent communication skills and be able to deal effectively with public officials and the general public on a variety of local government legal matters. The ideal candidate must be a graduate of an accredited law school; a member of the Virginia State Bar; and have ten or more years of broad experience in Virginia local government law, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Comprised of 400 square miles and the second fastest growing City in Virginia, Suffolk enjoys a high quality of life. The City of Suffolk invites applicants to apply for the position of City Attorney. The City Attorney performs professional work advising City Council, City Departments, and various City boards and commissions on legal matters and represents the City in court when necessary. Reporting to City Council, the City Attorney provides legal counsel to City departments to advise officials on issues with legal implication for the City, litigates all jury and non-jury complex cases on behalf of the City, and practices in all courts of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Federal Courts (including Bankruptcy Court), U.S. Supreme Court, and administrative tribunals, while also serves as a special prosecutor for the Commonwealth. Fields of law practiced in this position include contract, employment, civil rights, personal injury (torts), constitutional, real estate, criminal, zoning, bankruptcy, and child welfare.
Residency in the City of Suffolk is a requirement. Position also requires graduation from an accredited school of law with a Juris Doctorate degree and more than 8 years of experience in the practice of law, preferably including work for local government; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be an active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar. Prefer certified guardian ad litem, notary public, and admittance in the U.S. District Court, Bankruptcy Court, and U.S. Supreme Court. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
