Imaging Process: Mac to File

There are many good options when it comes to choosing which application will handle your imaging process; for this guide I will be using SuperDuper!.

Creating The Image

  1. Open up SuperDuper!
  2. Set the "Copy" field to the drive you wish to image.
  3. Set the "to" field to "Disk Image..." and then select its save destination. This file could wind up being rather large as it will take up just as much space as you currently have filled on the source drive. If needed, set the file to be compressed to reduce it's size.
  4. If the lock at the bottom left is still closed, click it and authenticate the application.
  5. Click "Copy Now".
Restoring The Image

  1. Connect your target machine to a spare machine with the image file you wish to restore via firewire. Turn your target machine on and hold down the 'T' key to boot into target mode. The remainder of the instructions should be executed on a separate machine.
  2. Open SuperDuper!, if the lock at the lower left hand side is in the locked position, click to unlock it and authenticate the application.
  3. In the "Copy" field select "Disk Image...", navigate to your previously saved image and select it.
  4. In the "to" field select the drive on the machine in target mode that you wish to restore that image to.
  5. Click "Copy Now".
  6. If no errors are thrown once it has completed, boot the target machine and verify that the image has carried over correctly.
