The 2005 American Community Survey (ACS) reveals that among 7.5 million residents in the Commonwealth, only half were born in Virginia, 40 percent were born in other states, and the remaining 10 percent were born in other countries. Furthermore, the 2005 population estimates show that the Commonwealth’s population growth between 2000 and 2005 was driven more by net migration (people moving in minus people moving out of the state), than by natural increase (births minus deaths). Further breakdown of migration fl ows to Virginia indicates that international migrants outnumbered domestic migrants (Fig. 1). With migration fueling state population growth, a natural urge for researchers is to fi nd out: Where do migrants come from? Who are they? How do they do?
