One of the most notable aspects of the current demographic situation in Virginia is the simultaneous expansion of the population at both ends of the age distribution. The press has devoted significant coverage to the aging baby boom generation and the potential social and economic consequences of its retirement from the labor force. Much less attention has focused on recent large birth cohorts. One result of these unusually large cohorts is record-setting numbers of students attending public schools.
