Presentations by Demographics & Workforce Staff to download in Powerpoint

"21st Century Talent Development", a presentation by Dr. Meredith Strohm Gunter and Barbara Kessler to the Virginia Workforce Council planning retreat on June 26, 2008.  The presentation offers a new comprehensive model for workforce development, data on population trends relevant to workforce professionals, and strategic views of workforce development represented in the missions and plans of various state agencies and organizations.

Investigating the use of the Holt-Winters time series model for forecasting population at the state and sub-state levels presented by Ms. Amanda Walters at the Population Association of America Meeting, April 18, 2008. It described the results of comparing the accuracy of population forecasts for Virginia’s planning districts and counties produced by the ARIMA and Holt-Winters time series models and, the most commonly used method, the cohort component method.

"Virginia's Foreign Born Population" presented by Dr. Qian Cai at the Virginia Association of Realtors' Relocation Conference, March 6, 2008. It described the size, composition and geographic distribution of Virginia's foreign-born population, its differences by birth region, and the characteristics of the most recent immigrants to the Commonwealth.

"100 Years of Immigration to Virginia" presented by Dr. Michael Spar at the 21st Annual meeting of the Virginia Local Government Managers Association, February 21, 2008. Reviews historic (1900) and current statistics on the foreign-born population residing in Virginia, including a comparison of the native and naturalized citizens and foreign-born non-citizens.

"Hispanic Immigrants and Citizens in Virginia" presented by Dr. Qian Cai to the Virginia Commission on Immigration on January 4, 2008. It compared the size, composition and characteristics of Hispanic immigrants to their Hispanic citizen counterparts and the Virginia's population overall.
"Demographic Trends in Virginia: The Impact on Public Schools" presented by Dr. Qian Cai to the Virginia House Appropriations Committee retreat, November 14, 2007. It focuses on the demographics of the school age population in Virginia and the fiscal impact on Average Daily Membership (ADM), free and reduced-price lunch, and Limited English Proficiency (LEP)

"Emerging Growth Patterns and Demographics in Virginia" presented by Dr. Qian Cai at the Virginia Transportation Conference, November 8, 2007. It describes the trends of domestic migration and immigration to Virginia, population aging, and their implications on transportation.

Public HS Graduate Projections & Community College Enrollments by Dr. Michael Spar at the Advisory Council of Presidents Meeting Meeting, October 25, 2007. Discusses the latest set of public high school graduate projections and their impact on "First-time Freshmen/Recent HS graduates" enrolled in each of the state's community colleges.

Preschool Enrollment: Identifying Virginia's Underserved Population by Amanda Walters at the Southern Demographic Association (SDA) Meeting, October 12, 2007. A demographic profile of Virginia's four-year-olds. This presentation also discusses the differences between those four-year-olds enrolled in preschool and those not enrolled in preschool, as well as the differences between publicly enrolled and privately enrolled four-year-olds.

Non Traditional Career Choices in Career and Technical Education Make Sense for Students and Our Society by Dr. Meredith Strohm Gunter at the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity professional development institute, April 2007. A presentation of data demonstrating that enrolling in career and technical education programs is a wise investment for students, and may help to meet demands for skilled workers. Careers not traditional by gender offer special opportunities in some high-wage, high-demand fields.
