Thomas M. Guterbock, founding director of CSR, received extensive training in quantitative, multivariate methods and has applied these in CSR research, publications and his applied work. In his role as senior project designer and project director for the Center, he has originated and implemented numerous studies, including many that involve either complex sampling, complex questionnaire protocols, or complex analysis strategies.
Dr. Guterbock is also Professor of Sociology, and Research Professor of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia, where he teaches survey research methods at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Ms. Bebel, Assistant Director at CSR, came to the Center in 2004 with 16 years of experience in survey research at Northern Illinois University’s Public Opinion Laboratory. As Director of Field Operations there, she was involved in all phases of project development and execution for local, state and national studies covering a wide range of topics and methodologies. She has focused her work on data quality issues, including effective question design, sampling and interviewer training.
Jim Ellis joined CSR as its Director of Research in 2007 after 20 years at Virginia Commonwealth University's Survey and Evaluation Research Laboratory. He holds his Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation from Virginia Commonwealth University, Master's degrees in Survey Methodology (University of Maryland-College Park) and Mass Communications (VCU), and a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia.

She also serves as the Chair of the Conference Support Committee for the American Association of Public Opinion. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Virginia in 2012. Deborah’s areas of interest include religion, non-profit organizations, and charitable giving.
A native of the area, Ila brings several years of office and accounting experience to her position with CSR. She's the one to contact if you're an employee with a question about pay or expense reimbursement, or if you're a client with a question about bills or payments. (And she cheerfully handles a lot of other types of questions, too!) Her duties include: Payroll, Client Billing and Internal Account Maintenance, and Accounts Payable.
Pete Furia holds a joint appointment as a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and a project manager at CSR. He received his Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University and completed extensive graduate coursework in survey research methodology at the University of Michigan.
